You’re fired — and you owe us money

Posted by: Adam Pasick

Taking back banker bonuses — known as “clawbacks” — has been mooted in the U.S. bailout of the financial industry, but Microsoft briefly broke some new ground this week by introducing the concept to severance payments.

Citing an accounting error, Microsoft notified laid off employees that they would need to give back part of their severance pay. The company graciously offered to accept either checks or money orders.

“An inadvertent administrative error occurred that resulted in an overpayment in severance pay by Microsoft,” a letter obtained by the blog TechCrunch reads. “We ask that you repay the overpayment and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to you.”

Late on Monday, the software giant realized that its request may have seemed just a teensy bit insensitive, and dropped the “clawback” request.

“This was a mistake on our part,” said a Microsoft spokesman. “We should have handled this situation in a more thoughtful manner.”

If you lost your job and your former employer asked for some of the severance money back, what would your response be? (Reminder: this is a family-friendly website, so keep it clean!)

Barracuda Spam Firewall Spam Accuracy Remains Unaffected by Recent Denial of Service Attacks to Spamhaus

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In light of recent ongoing distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks aimed at Spamhaus and other public domain IP and domain name reputation services, Barracuda Networks, Inc., today announced that such attacks have had no effect on the spam blocking accuracy of the Barracuda Spam Firewall. Utilizing its own Barracuda Reputation analysis combined with 11 other defense layers and the recently announced Predictive Sender Profiling techniques, the Barracuda Spam Firewall protects customers against email-borne threats even as popular public domain reputation services experience service interruptions.

“While Barracuda Networks recommends the use of Spamhaus block lists with the Barracuda Spam Firewall, reputation checks to external providers are performed after the Barracuda Spam Firewall’s own reputation checks, which are kept current through our Energize Updates service,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “Therefore, the vast majority of SMTP connection attempts that can be blocked through IP reputation lookup are already blocked by the Barracuda Spam Firewall independent of any external providers. Moreover, techniques such as Predictive Sender Profiling block spam messages in the growing number of cases when IP reputation alone cannot be relied upon.”

The attacks, which caused Spamhaus servers to experience outages earlier this week, were launched using variants of the “Storm Worm” and were distributed through zombie computer networks. Barracuda Central, an advanced technology center at Barracuda Networks consisting of highly trained engineers who continuously monitor and block the latest Internet threats, detected all known “Storm Worm” variants early on and quickly deployed new virus definitions to all Barracuda Spam Firewalls, Barracuda Web Filters and Barracuda IM Firewalls in the field through Energize Updates. This ensured that Barracuda Networks’ customers were not swept into the zombie computer networks used to spread the DDOS attacks.

What is it Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer. "Mesothelioma" is the term used to describe a cancerous tumor which involves the mesothelial cells of an organ, usually the lungs or abdominal organs.

The most common type of mesothelioma is the pleural mesothelioma. The pleura is a thin membrane found between the lungs and the chest cavity. It provides a lubricated surface so that the lungs do not chafe against the chest walls. Thus, a pleural mesothelioma is often referred to as a "lung" cancer.

Another form of mesothelioma is the peritoneal mesothelioma. The peritoneum is the membrane that encloses the organs of the abdomen. While peritoneal mesotheliomas are less common than pleural mesotheliomas, they tend to be more invasive, and may thus result in a shorter life expectancy for the patient. Mesotheliomas have also been found in the stomach and other abdominal organs.

Why Me?

A common question posed by persons afflicted with mesothelioma is, "Why did this disease develop in me?" The answer is nearly always the same-exposure to asbestos. When diagnosed in the United States, its onset is typically linked to a history of exposure to asbestos fiber. Asbestos is a mineral that was used for decades as a thermal insulation material. It has been widely known since the 1920's that asbestos is a carcinogen, which means that it causes cancer in humans. However, asbestos was used as an insulator until the mid-1970's, and is still present in massive quantities in many buildings today. Unfortunately, in many cases very little exposure is required to set this cancer in motion.

Occupations Commonly Associated With Later Development of Mesothelioma

Occupations that deal with asbestos and which are often associated with the onset of mesothelioma later in life are as follows:

•Insulators •Pipe Fitters •Plumbers
•Electricians •Painters •Plasters
•Crane Operators •Floor Coverers •Pot Tenders
•Welders •Paper Mill Workers •Custodians
•Steam Fitters •Tile Setters •Aerospace
•Mechanic •Building Engineers •Demolition Crews
•Former US Navy Personnel •Packing/Gasket Manufactorin Workers •Protective Clothing Manufactoring
•Rubber Worker •Warehouse Worker •Home Improvement
•Hospital •Schools •Loading Docks
•Glass Factory Worker •Building Inspectors •Bulldozer Operator
•Manufacturing Workers •Excavating machine operators •Heavy Equipment Mechanics
•Job and Die setters •Contractors •Building Managers
•Mixing Operatives •Laborers •Sawyers
•Teachers •Tinsmiths •Weavers
•Hod Carriers •Excavators •Technicians

Asbestos has been used in association with a number of occupations in addition to those above. For instance, a number of former military personnel, particularly naval, came into contact with asbestos during their service. Massive amounts of asbestos were used in shipbuilding and commercial construction prior to the mid-1970's. Anyone involved with those industries is at a higher risk for developing an asbestos-related disease, including mesothelioma. Exposure may have been direct or indirect, lengthy or brief. The typical exposure period is lengthy, but some persons with short, indirect exposure to asbestos develop mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can also occur from non-occupational exposure, as evidenced by manifestation of the disease in women whose exposure came from washing the clothing of men (father, husband, son) who worked with, or araound, asbestos.

A unique feature of asbestos-related injuries is the long latency period between exposure to asbestos and the onset of the injury or disease. For mesotheliomas, the latency period is between 15 and 50 years, or more. That means that a person could have been exposed to asbestos years ago, and develop mesothelioma today. The average mesothelioma latency period is approximately 35 - 40 years.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 3,000 new cases per year of malignant mesothelioma are being reported in the United States, and the incidence appears to be increasing. The disease is three times more common in men than in women. In men, the occurrence of mesothelioma is ten times higher in men between the ages of 60-70 as compared to men between the ages of 30-40. Occupational exposure to asbestos over the past fifty years in the United States is calculated to have occurred in approximately eight million people.

Clinical Signs of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma symptoms can be very general and therefore they are often ignored. In most cases, symptoms for this type of cancer arise 2 to 3 months before the cancer is found. Click on the mesothelioma types below to learn about their respective symptoms.

Management of mesothelioma depends largely on the staging of the tumor. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention may lengthen life expectancy. Depending on the age and physical condition of the patient, however, surgery may not be a viable option. In addition to surgical options, radiation treatment and chemotherapy may be helpful in the overall therapeutic program. Pain management and home care are typical alternatives in the later stages of the disease.

Where Do I Go From Here?

After diagnosis, it is important to understand your treatment options. Your doctor or oncologist will provide you with information on the treatments that are available to you.

It is also important to know about your legal rights. If you have mesothelioma, or any other asbestos-related disease, you were most likely exposed to asbestos. Many of the manufacturers of asbestos insulation products knew for decades that asbestos was hazardous, yet made a business decision not to warn people of those hazards. As a result, you may have a right of recovery against those manufacturers, which can help defray the costs of treatment and provide compensation for your pain and suffering.

Compare Student Loan Consolidation Rates in Selecting a Lender

by Torrie Cantor

If you want to select the best lender, compare student loan consolidation rates. A lot of students who have just graduated find it advantageous to consolidate student loans at once. The next crucial step would have to be choosing the right lender from which to apply a student loan consolidation from. Nowadays, there are many lenders that offer you different loan consolidation programs, each with various requirements, interest rates, and etc.

This article will give you some things to consider when choosing a lender. Although it is very important for you to compare student loan consolidation rates, you should also take into account some details in choosing a loan consolidation program and a lender.

Comparing School Loan Consolidation Rates

You could cut your student loan payments by up to 50% or more if you consolidate your student loans. This could mean big savings and thousands of dollars on the life of your loan. You could also be able to lock down a low and fixed interest rate for your monthly payments.

Inquire about the rates. When choosing a lender, you should ask them about the rates that they can give you. Usually, the interest rate on a consolidation loan is calculated by getting the weighted average of the interest rates (as of the date the application is received by the lender) on all the loans you are consolidating, rounded up to the nearest one-eight of a percent.

Other Things to Consider

Of course, there are other things to look into. It will also be wise if you ask your lender to figure out your monthly payments and how long it would take for you to fully pay the total loan balance. Also, you should try asking about incentives, like additional breaks on interest if you make your payments through automatic debits each month or if you consistently make on-time payments for a specific period of time.

Requirements

Lenders may ask for different requirements. There are some lenders that will require you to have a co-signor, some optional, and some do not require this at all. In lending companies that posts this as optional, having a co-signor with a good credit background will let you enjoy some benefits like lower interest rates.

While some lenders require collateral, some don’t. Some lenders also set a minimum balance policy, and the amount varies from one lender to another.

Application

Easy application process is also one thing to look for in a lender. Now, there are some lenders that provide online application that can be accomplished in just a matter of minutes. The process is quick and all information released is kept confidential. After 15 minutes of submission, you will be immediately called by a customer service representative on the contact number that you provided.

Service

Service is very important. If you’re comfortable and satisfied with your current lender’s service, then you can just check with them to see if they offer loan consolidation. Either that, or you can check your school’s financial aid offices for a list of preferred lenders who have provided tried-and-true working experience to former students.

Those are some things to look out for. So if you are choosing a lender, compare student loan consolidation rates and other details.

Make sure the rate of interest doesn’t change
by Rem

For many couples, whether first time buyers or not, the prime thought when looking at a fixed rate mortgage is the monthly payment cost. A large number of people these days have decided to wait and are purchasing homes later but they also wish to settle their mortgage earlier. Although before signing any documentation, there is a great deal to consider.

Over the course of the mortgage, it’s essential to remember to make sure the interest rate doesn’t change. It is always wise to avoid agreements that appear to too good to be true because they invariably are. The interest rate remains the same for long term fixed rate mortgages over the life of the mortgage. There are no hidden surprises which is great for many people that need a set monthly mortgage payment. Both my wife and I decided to explore fixed rate mortgages when we started looking at homes for sale. Although it was fundamental for us to pay off our loan as soon as we could, we didn’t need high, unrealistic monthly payments which we would have a problem sustaining.

In addition to considering loans for a long term, fifteen year fixed mortgage rate we also looked into loans that spanned 30 years as well. The problem was that we weren’t very happy about having a mortgage still running close to when we both retired and hoped that a fifteen year fixed mortgage rate would still be accessible to us. We felt there was lots of insistence to have the house settled as soon as practicable and for the most part we agreed with this.

There were many things that factored into this; first of all, I learned that my wife was having a baby. Because my wife wanted to be at home for our child, her financial income would be uncertain and unreliable. Alas, a higher monthly payment is the downside of loans on a 15 year fixed mortgage rate plan. It was a case that we plainly didn’t wish to get in too deep and cause troubles in the future.

Despite the trepidation of having a longer term loan, the 30 years fixed mortgage rate did reduce the monthly installments considerably. During the year, if we have some spare cash, we can make additional repayments which helps to lower the amount owed. Just by making a handful of additional repayments throughout a one year period you can knock years off of your mortgage period.

As such the thirty year fixed mortgage rate brought the monthly installments down quite a bit. During the year, if we have some spare cash, we can make additional installments which helps to lower the sum of money owed. Just by making a handful of supplemental payments throughout a twelve month period you can knock years off of your loan period. Although this takes some discipline, it is well worth it in the long term. Under different conditions, we would have preferred to have taken out a mortgage with a 15 year fixed mortgage rate but we had to consider our other commitments as well. Despite all our worries, things turned out well for us in the end and we don’t regret our decision.
